Assessment of Cytotoxicity, Antibacterial Activity and Phytochemical Screening of Acetone Extract of Exoecaria agallocha L. (family: Euphorbiaceae) Bark

Abstract


In the present work, the acetone extract of the barks of Excoecaria agallocha L. (Family: Euphorbiaceae) were investigated for preliminary phytochemical screening, cytotoxicity and antibacterial activities. The presence of phytochemical constituents was identified by characteristic changes using standard procedure. Brine shrimp lethality (BSL) bioassay was used to investigate the cytotoxic effects and the agar disc diffusion method was used for antimicrobial assay of the plant extract. The phytochemical screening of acetone extract of the plant showed the presence of alkaloids,Tannins, Flavonoids and steroids. The acetone extracts of Excoecaria agallocha L. bark showed cytotoxicity with LC50 and LC90 values of 504.26μg/mL and LC90: 799.38μg/mL respectively. The extract of Excoecaria agallocha L. bark showed significant antibacterial activity against gram positive bacteria only such as such as B. subtilis (19.16±0.49 mm), and the gram negative bacteria such as P. aeruginosa (20.32±0.79mm), S. typhi (30.05±0.48mm) and Vibrio cholerae (15.34±0.32mm). The obtained results showed a potential source of biologically active compounds which can be used as antibacterial agents.
